I look forward to being able to post some content of my own, starting with a documentation of my Vulcan meditation lamp project. However, I have been spending some time this week working on some technical issues related to the site, which seem like top priority. I wanted to let you know what is up.
Currently if you go to “fleetworkshop.org” (without the subdomain) or “www.fleetworkshop.org”, you get nothing. I am setting up an Microsoft Azure web app to handle those requests and redirect them here, until and unless we decide to create a landing page with content that is separate from the forum. This leaves us the option to add other types of content outside of a forum content if we want to at some point, such as a sort of “community consensus” guide on best practices for scratch building a TOS hero tricorder, etc. Installing the forum software under the discuss.fleetworkshop.org subdomain further makes it easier to switch out forum hosting providers at some point in the future, since from the technical infrastructure of the internet, subdomains are basically treated like separate websites. It’s slightly sub-ideal from an SEO perspective, but I don’t that this is really a priority for this project.
I also own the fleetworkshop.com domain and will redirect all requests there to their fleetworkshop.org equivalents. This will just prevent any future confusion and will prevent any potential malicious parties buying that domain to sow confusion.
At any rate, this has all taken longer than expected because I’m stitching together lots of internet components–doing some digital “scratch building,” as it were, rather than just using a pure off-the-shelf solution, such as parking our hosted forum software right at the root domain.
I am also setting up reply-by-email, so that you can reply to an email notification of a forum post right from your email and that will then be processed back into the forum software within 5 minutes or so. This feature is turned on but experimental at the moment. Please let me know if anybody tries it and hits any snags (or successes!)
I just wanted to let everyone know what was up. Thanks for your patience while we ramp everything up.
