I have been obsessed with the TOS bridge displays since I first saw the series back in the 60s’. Over the years I have build several of them but the one that I have always wanted is the Comm 2 display. This display is one of the most recognizable displays because it is right behind the captains chair and got a LOT of screen time. It stood out because of its distinctive patterns. Here is what it looked like in the show (it’s on the far left side):
I started the build by building the cabinet which I used 3/4" plywood then I laminated it with black textured ABS plastic:
To separate the lighting sections I made a grid which was laser cut black acrylic. I assembled them using a printed pattern because the tolerances are very tight. After I assembled them I fit them into the case:
LED strips and a Arduino were used to control the sequence.
The back has a rocker switch and power supply outlet for the AC adapter although I will probably end up powering this via USB
It will be finished with an aluminum angle around the perimeter of the face but I ran out. I will pick some up this week and finish it up but here it is operating (and almost finished):
