One of my projects this weekend is to make progress on an Endgame PADD I purchased from @Eric_Ardros via eBay. This one will be the red, engineering version, but I'm planning on doing the blue, medical version sometime in the future too.
For the most part, I'm following Matt Munson's old Endgame Padd Tutorial.pdf (81.0 KB). But there were a few gaps in the instructions that I needed to figure out before starting. The key gaps were: accurate paint colors, sourcing the correct styrene for the buttons, and the sourcing the jewel for the "camera."
The paint colors were quite easy to find. The tutorial listed the original PlastiKote colors, and @Eric_Ardros provided more information in the Paint Codes thread. From there, I was able to find Dupli-Color equivalents:
- Engineering: PlastiKote GM 7204 / Duplicolor BGM0380 Medium Garnet Red Metallic
- Medical: PlastiKote FM 8058 / Duplicolor BFM0187 Dark Blue Metallic
Using lots of reference pictures and help from sellers on eBay and on TPZ, I found the buttons were made from Plaststruct styrene. For finely textured styrene (the larger square button and the backing piece of the smaller rectangular button), I'm using "Plastruct N Scale / 1:200 Corrugated Siding (91510 / PS-10)." Prior to painting, compared to some reference photos from screen used kits, this looks like a good match.
For more heavily textured styrene (the smaller, rectangular button), I haven't sourced the correct styrene yet. It looks very similar to the Evergreen Metal Siding styrene used on the Geordi PADD. I'm tempted to order that and give it a try, though I suspect the original was one of the larger scale Corrugated Siding styrenes by Plastruct (my guess is either 1:100 / PS-11 or 1:48 / PS-24). I haven't yet found anywhere local that sells Plastruct sheets, otherwise I'd check it out in-person. Does anyone have any recommendations for the this styrene?
Color-wise, it looks like the back of the button panel and the black buttons are painted the same black, though some photos look like it's a matte black, while other look a bit glossier. The tutorial suggests gloss black, so I'll likely stick with that. For the gray buttons, the rectangular button looks like Krylon Dove Gray (Stone Gray or Castle Rock being the modern approximations). For the medical PADD, the large square button is also gray; I'm not quite sure the correct color for that one. It looks like it may be a tad darker that Dove Gray and/or have a bit of a metallic sheen.
For the camera, @propaholic helped me out over at TPZ and sent me an extra he had. For others that may be interested, the original was a blue jewel that came from a girls fingernail kit. They cut the jewel in half to make it triangular.
Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I hope this information is useful to someone else looking to build one of these up!
Included below are my reference photos. The ones from ScreenUsed have been especially helpful with the buttons.
