We lost a wonderful artist in the prop field a few months ago when Bill “Sporak” Fink died from injuries in a car accident. We were already planning to thank him in this latest episode for an important contribution. But his passing makes this a sad occasion.
Here’s the tribute page in the credits…
I had worked with Sporak when we needed an “I.S.S. Enterprise” plaque done for the “Mirror Mirror” sequel that we titled “Fairest of Them All.” Bill’s work was tremendous, delivering exactly what we needed for that shoot.
So when it came time to revisit the Defiant, in an episode penned by “Tholian Web” screenwriter Judy Burns, we again asked Sporak if he could work his magic. And, of course, the result was perfect.
The changeover from Enterprise bridge to Defiant bridge literally took place over a lunch hour. While the cast and rest of the crew ate lunch, the art department switched out the vliewscreens above the consoles (another Feek61 series of designs!) and installed blue gels in the overhead lighting. And then came the “switch” of the dedication plaques…
The end result was a very convincing DEFIANT!
