Goal = Now 2017…but…the WCM is in extraordinary condition and possibly better than many of the props used on set in Season 3 (my opinion of course).
Exact lighting conditions have a big big impact on how color plays on Zylonite Primer. Notice how in the West Coast Collector provided photo’s (herewith) a single photo makes the P1 look black (the photo with Mitutoyo Caliper). P1’s are not black.
I have had a terrible time trying to capture and correct the P1 Zylonite color so it looks as it did on screen. Daylight studio lamps, or better yet daylight itself, brings out the authentic slightly blue grey color. Also, it needs to go over black fiberglass like the original props. Remember paint is transparent. Paint some acrylic and hold it up to the light, the light passes right through.
On my multiple trips to the MoPop I first thought the Zolar-X was made with a Black P1. I thought this odd since the “legend” was the B&W phasers were all repainted with the grey/grey scheme?
I forgot about the warm interior lighting on my first R&D trip. The room is back-lit red with lots of low voltage warm white lighting. On my subsequent visit I brought a gemological color-corrected “daylight” pocket flashlight (gemology is my other hobby). The Zolar-X is black when displayed in and interior warm-white-light and/or when flash photographed (not a modern speedlight, but an old school hot-shoe slave flash or built-in flash). However the color correct gem light revealed the Zylonite color.
Check out these screen shots and archive photo’s to see what I mean. Pay particular attention to how the colors shift around on the “Spocks Brain Episode” comparisons;
