I have to share this incredible collection of Geordi PADDs all built up by our very own EWilliams. The base kits are ones that Eric Ardros and renaissance_man offered on the TPZ some time back. There are some really creative and well thought out ideas implemented with these builds!
The first batch of engineering PADDs are probably the most iconic of all “The Reds.” This bad boy premiered in the 1st season of TNG and was used throughout most of the series. These are also my favorites in the collection, not only because they such unique props, but also because of all the creative thought EWilliams put into them when doing the builds.
Some early screen caps show the bottom button area to be flush with the surface of the PADD, while others look like that area is slightly recessed. So which way did EWilliams do it? Well, both… He build a really neat platform that incorporates an isolinear chip, that when used makes the control buttons flush with the top PADD layer, and when left out you get the recessed look. The platform and control button areas all hold together with magnets and can be removed to reveal the PADDs internal circuitry.
The later incarnation of this same PADD has slightly different surface detailing, and another really creative personal touch from EWilliams. One area that we debated back and forth about was the small window on the left side of the PADD. Some screencaps show the honeycomb graphic detail and others show that area to be solid white. We ultimately decided that the original prop did have that detail, and that it most likely fell out at some point from ware. As you can see below, EWilliams ultimately decided to include that honeycomb detail.
Unless of course you decide to use your isometric decoupler to remove the sensor matrix… The honeycomb detail is mounted on a small magnetic plate allowing the detail to be removed and reapplied with ease.
And once again we have the internal service configuration with some really great hidden detailing.
The last in this series is a very special Geordi PADD modeled after the Chris Avilla version that was featured in the Star Trek Magazine. Chris built a number of PADDs that were used in the TNG cast feature films.
Next up are the variants of Geordi’s engineering PADD that showed up in the 4th season.
The first is a kit made by renaissance_man, that EWilliams was able to rework to include the alternating green and red flashing lighting effect.
And also a beautiful static resin kit from Eric Ardros.
And finally, the version used throughout the 7th season of TNG and Star Trek Generations.
This very unique style was a mystery until very recently, and is a really neat departure from alot of the Federation gear we had previously seen.
It also showed up in Star Trek Generations with slightly modified graphics and detailing.
