Thanks Ryan but I've already glued up one blank and have enough material for another. Which means that I will hopefully end up with at least one good one. Fortunately this is being painted so I can bondo any screw ups and start over so maybe I will end up with two. I also have all the cutters needed so I'll stay within my comfort zone for this one. A couple of questions for you though Ryan. Is the diameter of the two vertical handle dowels 7/16 and did you ever source a good place for the clear tubes. I've searched a few sites and found some possible ones. I've even looked into coin collector tubes. Just wondering what you came up with.
The flasks are still an unresolved question. The stock tubing I was able to find with 1.75" diameter has walls that look visibly too thick to my eyes. Please let me know if you're able to find something better!
Sure Ryan how long are they BTW?
I have them at 5"
Check these out Ryan. I think the H model is the right size.
These look to be the right overall size, though my experience with these types of coin holders is that they're more like sleeves than flasks. That is to say that they're usually a fairly flexible thin-walled design, which to me doesn't seem quite right. If you were thinking of giving them a try, however, please let us know what you think of them in person.
Ryan, I was concerned about wall thickness too. I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere. Maybe I'll order just one to see if it will work.
Thanks, Joe. Or I'm happy to order one. Just keep us posted.
Not a problem Ryan, I just ordered one. I let you know what it's like.
I got the coin holder in the mail today and you where right Ryan, the wall thickness is too thin, only 0.020. It was also larger in diameter than described, closer to 1 7/8 than 1 3/4. I will have to search some more. Here are some pictures of my progress so far.
Looks pretty good so far Joe
Very nice Joe.
Do you feel the size is about right?
Fast and impressive work, as always, Joe.
I'll second this question.
One way to tell would be to mark out a 20" diameter circle and see if it looks proportional to this:
Thanks Larry and Ryan. I'll mock up a transporter pad and see how case looks against it. Good idea.
One thing you could do if you want to wait is to takeit with you to the set in NY to match it up.
I was hoping to have it finished by then Mike but that would be a good test and make for a neat picture. Something to think about when we're there.
So when we say 20" circle is that just the glass or does that count the metal rim as well?
That's a good question. The way @GSchnitzer worded his post above, I assumed it was the fresnel lens only and not the rim.
The specs say (and our lenses say) that the 416 Fesnel lens condensers are 20-inch diameter Pyrex. I presume, but don't know, that tha last inch of that diameter (1/2 on each side) is taken up with the retaining ring. I think the point of the ring would be to overlap the diameter somewhat. Otherwise it wouldn't have much in the way of retaining functionality. It would be like having a manhole diameter that's just a bit larger than the manhole cover.
