A database would probably be better, actually. Excel is a glorified calculator (a task if performs very well); it's just not ideal for relational data types.
What I suppose we really need is a wiki in addition to the forum discussions here.
I made some rudimentary efforts a while ago toward making a skeleton Trek prop wiki using the Wikia platform (the same as Memory Alpha), but I don't love Wikia because it has so many ads if you look at it without an ad blocker. Maybe I should look into a hosted wiki just for the Fleet Workshop, which we can use to catalog the collective wisdom that emerges from all of these threads. Wikis allow for easy cross-referencing, etc. It would be a long multi-year project for the community to build out a comprehensive Trek prop wiki, but I would be totally down for trying to facilitate that. I would love to see us have a fairly exhaustive sort of "Memory Alpha for props" in a year or two's time!
