Greetings everyone. As some of you know, some months back I started a project where I cut up a pencil box in an effort to create a really accurate communicator shell. I've took apart and rebuilt the box two times because I felt there still was room for improvment, even though my first two attempts yielded some really impressive results.
Now enter the shapeway shells, which have been made available through herocomm and Anikan star killer. These shells , for a lack of a better word, are "ultimate" in revealing what Alpha REALLY looks like.
So my latest attempt building the pencil box is based on these shells. Using a caliper, I measured out the well, jewel panel, and control panel. Using an outline of the shells, I constructed the box with the same exact taper from bottom to top that alpha has, as well as length and width.
I'm leaving in all the seam lines, which were made in the exact spots as the originals. So in short, this box/buck/shell should be a really kick ass, accurate representation of alpha and these shapeway shells.
Here are a few photo's showing the process. After a few test pulls, I'll be making them available for anyone who wants a set, assuming all comes out as planned and they are worthy of sale.
Here is the first box I cut up. To make the cuts I used a miter box and a hax saw. Very very carefully and slowly making the cuts. When the plastic started to melt I would stop for a few minutes.
I then add a wooden base.
I used some tin to shape the inside.
The finished box.
I then poured a silicone mold and then poured resin for the buck.
Here are some pictures of the mold being poured.
So now I have to sand and contour the buck a bit and then send it out for a test pull. next post will be of a shell, and I can't wait to how how it's going to look.
