Aren’t there any commercially available “pads” that could display a ‘correct’ graphic? You can order stick-on labels (Gelaskins) with custom graphics for the edges. If you really only want a small screen, the graphics could stick on part of the display. The buttons might be an issue… but I’m sure a simple app could be written to scroll text, etc.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab E NOOK® measures Height: 9.52" (241.8 mm) Width: 5.89" (149.6 mm) Thickness: 0.38" (9.65 mm). And “only” costs $200.
For a PADD with a more ‘authentic’ sized screen, The NOOK GlowLight Plus™ measures Height: 6.4" (163.6 mm) Width: 4.7" (119.6 mm) Thickness: 0.34" (8.6 mm). This could be the live display in a larger frame.
The iPad measures 9.4 x 6.6 inches, with a color display… and costs $329. But if you already have one… (:
