Finally finished my ring
Big thanks to Nick for the pin and for trading me an accurate curved slot iris!
All of the parts:
I turned a little adapter to snap into the brass ring for the enamel pin to sit on since the ring I had cast at Shapeways was designed for a printed bird:
A little epoxy and finished! Well, mostly… it’s a little too shiny right now and could use a little acrylic paint gunk in the grille slots.
For the personal and non-commercial use of TFW users, here are files you can send to Shapeways to make your own (import with units set to inches). The ring is approximately size 9.
For the ring, I’d recommend their “raw brass” to match the iris housing. While they do offer gold plated brass, the attached grille is so thin as to be unlikely to survive the manufacturing process.
For the bird, try printing in Frosted Ultra/Extreme Detail. You’ll want to very lightly sand the flat surface of the bird to smooth out the print texture. Then paint with red enamel (basic Testors model paint works great) and color the raised bird with something like a Molotow Liquid Chrome pen.
You’ll also need the Thorlabs iris.
