Well, with activation/switcher button located at the top of the grip, kind of makes it easier to switch between stun and kill, just 2 settings. Sort of like the selector switch on the side of a M16. And unlike the Prime Universe weapons where you had to keep upping the power. Now you can see the barrel switch and know the setting changed unlike the the old point it down, look down and manually change the setting. You also got to remember, 50 yrs for TOS, 30 yrs for TNG, 25 Yrs for DS9 and 20 Yrs for Voyager. The prime age of the audience (and the producers, writers etc) has changed as well as their perceptions to technology. TOS communicator was cool because there weren't any Cell phones. Ditto for other devices over the years. Ole Steve Jobs probably never would have developed the iPad when he did if it wasn't for TNG characters running around with the PADDs. Every remake/rejump is based on the current producers and writes views of what the subject should be. I have about 7 or 8 DVDs of the War of The World. Same basic story line but different production values based on when they were made. Food for thought.
