Though I posted some of this here and there, I think it is time to bundle it within one topic that will be continuously updated as more stuff will be finished (what will certainly stretch over several years).
I hope that “Show and tell” is the best place for this. If not, feel free to move it.
I would like to introduce you to the “Steam Trek Universe”.
A Steampunk interpretation of the Star Trek Universe in all its incarnations.
What began for us in 2014 as a fun little crossover idea, developed into a complete mirror of our known Star Trek universe.
The iconic TNG uniforms were the beginning. And of course props like a tricorder or a phaser had to be added as well.
With expanding into the other series, research for suitable historic base patterns led to a full timeline for a plausible Steam Trek history. Placing TNG designwise in the 1870-90, TOS a generation before around 1830s (since life expectancy was shorter than ), DS9 and VOY would follow into the late 1890s, while late TNG (Nemesis) was nearing the 1910s. ENT was stretching the bounderaries of the limited human reach in space during the 1770s followed by DSC around 1818 and The Cage 1825 (my only alteration since I feel DSC would preceed The Cage).
In designing the uniforms and props, I tried to stay true to the iconic features of the originals “translating” them into the Steampunk and historic aesthetic. Some are staying pretty close in design to the originals (like the TNG Mk X Tricorder), some are interpreted more freely (like the early TNG Type 2 Phaser).
Though only a fraction materialized until now, for most of it the designs are already done on paper or my mind, waiting only for the time and budget (and did I mention time?) to be realized as well.
I will add all what we have done so far piece by piece in this thread, not only showing but also sharing insights and explaining the ideas behind certain designs.
Since I found this forum a wealth of inside/insight information on Star Trek, I will also exclusively show you some of the shapes to come, which I usually rarely do, waiting with presenting till we have finished them.
But I feel that the illustrious propmaking community in this forum might appreciate that and it’s also a small token of my gratitude, giving something back for the inspiration and helpful informations I got from here.
So to quote a vulcan Steam Trek phrase: “Steam on and progress”
PS: …but please be patient, I’m a slow poster…
