A little project of mine has been making vector files for all the TNG tricorders and I’ve lately turned my attention to the Mark VI.
I was discussing this with @eclu123, our resident tricorder graphics expert, and in his version he used Arial Bold for the main font. This is a close match, but I think it’s possible to get closer. My first intuition in looking at it was that it might actually be the Wes Anderson favorite Futura, a font I adore.
After hours of investigation and looking at various options, I actually believe that’s a plausible guess—and that the best match is an Elsner + Flake version, EF Futura Heavy New.
I went through the whole Identifont decision tree, and these were the candidates that weren’t eliminated:
The graphics appear to have been screen-printed, which always entails some loss of detail, so it could easily be a slight variation on Futura (I am especially dubious on the shape of the “R”), but I’m pretty sure that it’s some flavor of Futura at least.
Does anybody know for sure? Or have any guesses on what the other (weird) font used for the EMRG letters might be?
Eurostile Heavy is close, but the M looks too wide.
It is also vaguely reminiscent of the Jeffries font (named after Matt Jeffries) and used in the ENT titles:
Microgramma, used in the TOS feature films, would be another candidate, though again the M looks too wide.
At any rate, once I get my graphics finished, I’ll post the Illustrator file here.
