After pouring over whatever reference material I could find online and on my hard drive (screencaps, auction pics) I believe I’ve drafted a reasonably accurate template for a larger scale Type-V Shuttlecraft as seen in the TOS cast films:
Some of you may remember I’d begun work on a similar build for the TNG Type-VI Shuttlecraft over at TPZ back in late 2013, which made a good deal of progress before it was shelved as other projects at the time took priority.
Well, I’ve decided to resurrect that build along with starting this one, using another Magellan CD Holder I bought last summer but with far more alterations (the Type-VI mainly only needed some small surface details added to further accurize it):
Though both the front and back ends of the CD holder will be utilized, a large styrene insert will need to be fashioned and put in between the two halves. More involved modifications will need to be made to the front end of the impulse housings than on the Type-VI.
Below you can see the areas that will require a major rework (highlighted in black Sharpie):
It’s amazing how many changes are needed to make it look more like the Type-V than the Type-VI. I initially thought it would just be a matter of dropping in the styrene insert, but through closely eyeballing a plethora of various ref pics shows there are many subtle differences between the two.
Guess that means I’ll also have to look around to see who might be able to do up a set of in-scale decals for the build once it’s finished. Anyone have any suggestions?
